Setting Up Drupal on IONOS

By Becca Possible, 5 July, 2024

Hey there, fellow Drupal enthusiasts! If you're ready to dive into the world of Drupal on IONOS and create your first article, you've come to the right place. In this guide, I'll walk you through the steps to set up Drupal on IONOS and get you started with your first piece of content. Let's make it happen!

Step 1: Choose Your IONOS Hosting Plan

Before we start, you'll need to select a hosting plan that suits your needs. IONOS offers various hosting options, but for this tutorial, we'll focus on their Web Hosting plans, which are perfect for Drupal sites.

  1. Go to the IONOS website.
  2. Navigate to "Web Hosting" under the "Hosting" menu.
  3. Choose a plan that fits your requirements. For most developers, the "Plus" plan is a great starting point, and is what I currently use.

Step 2: Set Up Your Domain and Hosting

Once you've selected your hosting plan, follow these steps:

  1. Register a Domain: If you don't have a domain yet, you can register one through IONOS during the setup process.
  2. Complete the Purchase: Follow the on-screen instructions to complete your purchase.
  3. Access the Control Panel: After your purchase, log in to your IONOS account and navigate to your control panel.

Step 3: Install Drupal

With your hosting plan set up, it's time to install Drupal.

  1. Access the Websites & Stores Panel: In your IONOS control panel, find the websites & stores section.
  2. Create New Website: Click the "Create new website or store" button.
  3. Install Drupal:
    • Scroll down and click "Popular Open-Source solutions".
    • Scroll down to "Drupal" from the list of available applications and click "Install".
    • Follow the prompts to install Drupal. You may need to provide details like your domain, admin email, and password.

Step 4: Configure Your Drupal Site

Now that Drupal is installed, let's configure it.

  1. Visit Your Drupal Site: Go to your domain (e.g., http://yourdomain.com) to access your new Drupal site.
  2. Install Modules: Once the basic setup is done, consider installing essential modules like "Pathauto" for clean URLs and "Admin Toolbar" for better admin navigation. I also love the "Module Filter" and "User Display Name" modules.

Step 5: Create Your First Article

With your site up and running, it's time to create your first piece of content.

  1. Log In to Drupal: Go to http://yourdomain.com/user/login and log in with your admin credentials.
  2. Access Content Creation:
    • In the admin menu, navigate to "Content" and then click "Add content."
    • Select "Article" from the content types available.
  3. Create Your Article:
    • Title: Enter a catchy title for your article.
    • Body: Write your content in the body field. You can use the text editor to format your text, add images, links, and more.
    • Tags: Add relevant tags to categorize your content.
  4. Save and Publish: Once you're satisfied with your article, click "Save and publish."

Step 6: Customize Your Site

After publishing your first article, take some time to customize your site.

  1. Themes: Explore and install different themes to change the look and feel of your site. You can find themes on Drupal's official site.
  2. Blocks: Use blocks to add additional content or features to different regions of your site.
  3. Menus: Customize your site's navigation by editing menus.
